UID - Unique Identification numbering is a globally unique "part identifier" containing data elements used to track DoD parts through their life cycle.

UID Data is encoded into 2D Data Matrix symbols that are applied to parts using Direct Part Marking processes (DPM). The DoD has moved to this transformation technology to facilitate electronic data capture and transmission.

UID is a mandatory DoD requirement for all solicitations issued on or after Jan. 1, 2004 in the following categories:

• costs over $5,000
• Serially managed
• Mission critical
• Controlled inventory
• Consumable item where permanent id is necessary

Only one middleware solution, RFIdirector, provides IUID construct generation, DPM output, and provides an interface with DoD’s Wide Area Workflow systems. Remember: UID data to Registry allows you to get paid: RFID allows things to be tracked (mandatory for most Government Furnished Equipment).
