EPC – Momentum and WalMart & DoD mandates have quickly established EPCglobal’s Gen 2, with 96 bits of memory, as the RFID data standard of choice for many global organizations and their trading partners. The DoD especially is a big believer in the benefits of RFID. By 2007, the department will require suppliers to apply RFID tags to cases, pallets and all packaging of commodities shipped to all DoD locations. Just one middleware solution, RFIdirector, is suitable to support all existing and future generations of EPCglobal’s data standards. It also supports devices connected to the new EPCIS platform. EPCIS is an EPCglobal technical specification that will allow trading partners to transfer and share EPC data across the supply chain in a standardized process and format. EPCIS is currently a specification; once it has passed through EPCglobal's standards development process and been ratified will it become an official standard.
